Resources for Reactions & Synthesis

SciFinder (more about using SciFinder Scholar and SciFinder Web)

  1. Start with the CAS Registry and search your substance by name or CAS Registry number (CAS-RN). In SciFinder Scholar go to Locate and search by Substance Identifier. In SciFinder Web go to Substances and search by Substance Identifier.  Bring up the Registry record, then select Get Reactions (in SciFinder Web) or to access CASREACT and view the reactions for your substance.
    • There are more than 15 million reactions in CASREACT, each with at least one article or patent reference which you can view in Chemical Abstracts.

  2. You can also search CASREACT directly by using the structure editor to draw one or more substances (and list functional groups) involved in the reaction. In SciFinder Scholar go to Explore and select Chemical or Reaction Structure to open the editor. In SciFinder Web go to Reactions to open the editor.

Beilstein

There are several ways to access this database of 22 million+ organic reactions, each one with at least one reference to the chemical literature, mostly journal articles. Use the full-text link to locate the article online and/or print via UC-eLinks.

  1. Search on the chemical name (etc.) to retrieve the substance record. The reactions, with references, will appear at the top of the record after the substance identification. You can browse all the reactions or go to View on the menu bar and select Substance as Reactant (or Product) only.
  2. Search by chemical name, but change the list of results to get Reactions instead of Substances. Instead of a single substance record, you could get several hundred smaller reaction records.
  3. Use the structure editor to draw one or more structures involved in the reaction.
